Instructions:

The listening tests on this website will record your ability to understand individual words spoken in a background of environmental noise.  The results will be used to evaluate different signal processing techniques designed to improve speech intelligibility in noise. 
                    
Each test lasts about 102 s, and contains 25 trials. The test words have been chosen to possess similar sounds, so that they might be easily confused. One of the words will be spoken in a phrase "Circle the  . .  (test word)  . .  again".  Please select the word you hear by mouse clicking on the button next to that word.  A trial takes about 4 seconds, and is immediately followed by the next trial. 
                    
The trials in each test are identified by rows, numbered 1 - 25, and displayed as follows:
                    
                        1:  rang    fang    gang    bang    sang    hang 
                    
                        2:	hark    dark    mark    lark    park    bark
                                    -  etc. -

After you finish each test containing 25 trials, you can pause before starting the next test.
                    
The first test of 25 trials consists of speech with no background of environmental noise. This is to help you become familiar with the test procedure.  
                    
Before you commence the tests, you will be asked on the next screen to adjust the volume control on your computer to a comfortable level when listening to low- and high-level sounds.  Please wear headphones, or earphones.  Once you have selected a comfortable listening level, do not change the volume control setting after you start the tests.  Do not perform tests listening to the loudspeaker built into your computer.    
                    
Please respond to each trial, even if you have to guess when the speech is muffled or unclear.  Only listen to each trial once (no repeats!).
